Another Sweep Day for NYU Softball

Violets Record Two More Wins on Thursday

Another day and another two wins for the New York University softball team.

The Violets raised their record to an unblemished 8-0 in Florida by sweeping another doubleheader at the North Collier Sports Complex on Thursday, March 17, in Naples, FL.

NYU rallied to defeat Nazareth College 7-4 in the opener and went on to shutout Alfred State College 8-0 in the nitecap.

The Violets faced a bit of adversity in the first game, committing two errors and allowing four unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning.

But, starter Marina Egbert did not allow a run the rest of the way.

"My job as a pitcher is just to anchor the team. If someone makes an error, they have to know that I have their back," Egbert said. "Our offense picked us up and it was a great win."

NYU scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings, then took the lead with two unearned runs in the fifth.

Another two unearned runs in the sixth inning provided the Violets with their winning margin.

Egbert only allowed five hits while striking out four. At the dish, she had a pair of singles and stole a base.

"My rise ball was working for me today, which isn't normal," Egbert added. "Usually, it's not my best pitch but it was snappy today and Hannah (Becker) was really great behind the plate."

Emma Aridi walked twice, scored two runs and had a sacrifice fly to drive in a run. Sophia Leon also recorded two hits and a sacrifice fly.

Another strong pitching performance from Emily Stone highlighted game two. She shutout Alfred State, giving up only three hits and striking out two over the shortened six-inning affair.

Leon was the hitting star. She went 4-for-4, scoring three runs and knocking in two.

"I can't tell you the last time I got four hits in a game," Leon admitted. "I just want to get on, read the defense, see who's up and who's back, see where I can get the ball through or over so I can just get on."

Egbert added another three hits and two RBI in the second game, while Lily Candelaria and Margaux Lesser each had a pair of hits.

"We overcame adversity in the first game which was good to see," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "Overall, we are playing well in all facets of the game."

The Violets conclude their Florida schedule with games against SUNY Delhi (9am) and Lesley University (11am) on Friday.
