Luke Boyer delivered a match-high 10 kills as New York University's
11th-ranked men's volleyball team defeated Baruch College in straight sets on Tuesday night at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
It was the Violets' second sweep of the season which increased their win streak to six matches.
"This was our first match in which we played a complete game," said head coach
José Piña. "We put pressure on the serve, we blocked well, we defended well and we transitioned well."
Boyer was the lone Violet with double-digit kills, giving him three straight matches with 10-or-more, and he hit .389 with three digs, three total blocks and an ace.
NYU scored the first four points of the match and went on to lead 12-4 in the first after
Buddy Cohen's kill. The Violets hit an impressive .542 in the opening frame as they cruised to a 25-16 victory.
Even more impressive was NYU's hitting in the second set with a .579 percentage for 12 kills in the frame. Despite trailing early, the Violets used five consecutive points in the middle of the set to go up 17-9 before securing a 25-15 win.
Set three was a bit closer as three straight Violet errors brought Baruch within two, 14-12. But, a 6-1 NYU run followed, capped off by a
Lucas Osiecki kill, giving the hosts momentum as they took the third 25-19 to secure a sweep.
"Baruch is a very good team, I honestly think they are going to win the CUNYAC again," Piña noted. "But, this week during training the emphasis was on starting fast and keeping our foot on the pedal. Just don't relax so much, which happened a bit in set three, but overall it was our first complete match."
Gautham Dasari finished with eight kills and a pair of aces while Osiecki had seven kills, four digs and two aces of his own.
Ryan Li dished out a match-high 33 assists and
Zach Knudsen totaled a match-high 11 digs.
Next up for the Violets is a trip to Springfield College's Morgan Classic where they'll open against Rutgers-Newark on Friday, February 10, in Springfield, MA.
