New York University's
11th-ranked men's volleyball team fell to third-ranked and host Springfield College in the title match of the Morgan Classic on Saturday night in Springfield, MA.
"A good showing by the young men. The team showed a lot of promise and quality in their performance tonight and during the weekend," said head coach
José Piña. "Against the highly ranked quality teams, we just have to be a bit cleaner and crisper and minimize our unforced errors while remaining aggressive."
The Violets came in as winners of seven straight, but were swept by the hosts despite a match-high 12 kills from sophomore
Luke Boyer.
NYU defeated 15th-ranked Rutgers-Newark in the opening round of the Classic as the Violets'
Gautham Dasari and
Lucas Osiecki were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts.
"Overall the boys performed well," Piña added. "Very proud of how they played and represented the University at the Morgan Classic. Congratulations to Gautham and Lucas for being named to the All-Tournament Team."
Against Springfield, NYU led 10-7 in the first but the Pride used a 6-1 run to take the lead and never trailed from there, going on to win the set 25-21.
The Violets took a 16-15 lead in the second after a Boyer kill, but a 9-2 run from the hosts gave them set point at 24-18. NYU scored four straight to make it 24-22, but the Pride's Noah Weislo delivered a kill to give Springfield a 25-22 triumph.
Springfield's offense really got going in the third, hitting .542 en route to 14 kills as it secured the sweep with a 25-17 win.
Boyer hit .476 for his match high in kills while Osiecki had eight and Dasari chipped in seven.
Ryan Li notched a team-high 28 assists and
Zach Knudsen produced a match-high-tying 10 digs.
The Violets return home for their next match, taking on top-ranked Stevens on Wednesday, February 15, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
