In a tight match that went down to the final seconds of the final heavyweight bout, the New York University wrestling team pulled out a 22-19 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday night in Hoboken, NJ.
NYU led early against the Ducks,
#12 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Team Dual Rankings, lost the lead, but won at the very end as heavyweight
Evan Anderson outlasted the Ducks' Michael Dooley 6-4.
The Violets wont he first two bouts and took an early 7-0 lead.
Stevens went ahead 14-7 after registering a pair of falls and a major decision.
But, when
Gabe Rodrigues at 197 produced a fall it was all tied at 19-19.
In the final bout of the evening, Anderson fell behind 2-0 before slowly making his comeback and clinching the win for NYU.
The other victories for the Violets came via major decision by
Taisei Kurachi (125), as well as decisions from
Benny Bautista (133),
Cooper Pontelandolfo (165) and
Scott DuPont (184).
"From top to bottom this was a total team effort," said Associate Head Coach
Corey Luce. "Evan knocked off a returning NCAA qualifier and Taisei knocked off the #2-nationally-ranked wrestler (Luke Hoerle). Just a terrific win for our team."
NYU is right back in action tomorrow for a match at New Jersey City University at 7:00pm in Jersey City, NJ.
