A pair of goals from
Bryce Lexow, an
Arkan Tahsildaroglu game winner and 12 saves by
Luca Mancuso gave New York University's men's soccer team a 4-2 road win over Rutgers University-Newark on Saturday night.
The victory snapped back-to-back losses for the Violets, who are now 3-2-1 thus far in 2022. NYU claimed victory in the fast-paced match despite being outshot 22-14 by the Scarlet Raiders.
Rutgers-Newark struck first when Pablo Moreno scored an unassisted tally in the 30th minute for a 1-0 advantage.
The Violets found the back of the net twice late in the first half, however, as Lexow delivered his first score of the night in the 40th. Then, three minutes later,
Rafael Panero-Ren put NYU in front with a goal off a pass from
Alex Rovirosa-Illa.
It was Panero-Ren's first goal of the season and one of two assists on the night for Rovirosa-Illa that gave New York a 2-1 halftime edge.
The Scarlet Raiders continued to apply pressure in the second half, receiving a penalty kick opportunity in the 57th minute. Franco Catania converted to level the score at two.
Tahsildaroglu responded with a beautiful strike four minutes later, maneuvering past his defender to the top left corner of the box before firing a bending shot into the upper left of the net for the go-ahead goal.
Lexow netted his team-leading fifth goal of the year for some insurance in the 75th minute, scoring on a breakaway after a lead pass from Rovirosa-Illa.
Rutgers-Newark didn't let up though, receiving another penalty chance in the final minute of the match. Mancuso stepped up and made a diving stop to his right, one of many impressive saves on the night, to preserve the multi-goal victory.
NYU will look to carry this momentum into its next match, a road test at #4 Messiah University in Grantham, PA, on Saturday, September 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
