The Violets outscored Brandeis University 23-11 across today's University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader, but New York University's baseball team split the day, and the series, with the Judges at Stein Diamond in Waltham, MA.
Four Violets had multiple hits in a 17-3 victory in game one while NYU's comeback effort fell short in game two, resulting in an 8-6 defeat. NYU now sits at 16-6 (6-6 UAA) on the season with just four Association games remaining.
How It Happened
Game One: NYU 17, Brandeis 3 (seven innings)
- Grant Berman opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first, but that was just the beginning for NYU's bats in this one.
- Cam Dunn connected on an RBI double in the second and was later brought home by Jacob Singer for a 3-0 lead after two.
- Berman launched a solo shot and Connor Roggero homered for the second straight game, this time a three-run blast, to highlight a seven-run third for the Violets.
- Brandeis managed to score three times in the bottom of the third, but that was the extent of its offense for the game.
- NYU plated one more in the fourth on a solo home run from Nick Argenziano and he went deep again with a three-run shot in the seventh as part of a six-run final inning to close out the victory.
Game Two: Brandeis 8, NYU 6 (nine innings)
- Neither side scored during the first two innings, but NYU got on the board in the third as Roggero stayed hot with an RBI double to right. Ryan Carr promptly doubled as well to score Roggero, giving the Violets a 2-0 edge after two-and-a-half innings.
- A two-run double off the bat of Brandeis' Mike Khoury tied things at two in the bottom of the third and he later came around to score as the Judges took a 3-2 lead.
- Another run from the hosts in the fourth and a three-run home sixth put the Judges ahead 7-2 entering the final third of the game.
- NYU stormed back in the seventh, however, as Roggero drove in another run, Alex VanLandingham scored on an error, Carr ripped a run-scoring double to center and Berman recorded an RBI single for a four-run frame that cut the Violets' deficit to 7-6.
- A solo homer in the bottom of the inning provided Brandeis all the insurance it needed as Jakob Newman held NYU scoreless over the final 1.2 innings to claim the save and salvage a series split for the hosts.
