New York University swimmers
Caitlin Marshall and
Jessica Flynn won national championships and three program records fell on a successful third day for the Violets at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, IN.
"I was really excited to finally see all the hard work from this season pay off," said Marshall. "It's insane to believe that I'm an NCAA champion and a record holder. The 200 fly has always been a tough race, but touching that wall and seeing 1:59 made it all worth it."
Marshall took first place in the women's 200-yard butterfly, breaking the program record with a finals time of 1:59.20. Flynn achieved glory in the women's 100-yard backstroke, snapping a program record she previously set this season with a 53.69-second finish. Both women became All-Americans with their historic performances.
"I was definitely more nervous than I've ever been going into today, but I really tried to channel that energy for my race and trust all of my training," Flynn said. "At the 75 flip I knew I was behind so I pushed my legs and arms hard and was able to get my hand on the wall first. When I finished I heard screams from our bleachers and it was awesome seeing my name up on the board with a number one next to it."
Head Swimming Coach
Trevor Miele spoke highly of both swimmers.
"I'm really proud of Caitlin and Jess. They worked so hard this year and it's awesome to see them win titles," he said. "Caitlin just dominated from start to finish. She couldn't have split the race any better and wound up winning easily. Jess got off to a great start and was slightly behind the swimmer from Emory, just like UAAs, and once again she had an incredible last lap and took the title. Very impressive swims by both of them!"
NYU's men's 800-yard freestyle relay squad also set a program record in the event, as
Nathaniel Yeoh,
Gabriel Giacoppo,
Graham Chatoor and
Connor Vincent combined to finish the race in 6:37.27. The foursome won the consolation finals, finishing ninth overall, as each swimmer earned Honorable Mention All-America honors.
More Honorable Mention All-America accolades were bestowed upon the Violets' women's 800 free relay team of
Leydn McEvoy,
Julianna Sosnowski,
Isabel Oldham and
Gabriella Torres. They tied for 14th overall after the consolation finals with a time of 7:33.95.
NYU was represented on the boards by men's diver
Hunter Whitbeck, who finished 23rd in the one-meter diving preliminaries.
The Violet women are tied for 12th as a team (101 points) and men 14th (61 points) after three days of competition.
The fourth and final day of the Championships begins tomorrow at 10am, first with the 100-yard freestyle. The 200-yard backstroke, 200 breast, 400 free relay, women's three-meter diving and 1650 free take place tomorrow as well.
