Schmidt Makes NYU History on Day Two of NCAAs

Violet women jump to 14th, men 15th in team rankings

New York University diver Issara Schmidt became the first freshman women's diving All-American in program history while three Violet relay squads and two individual swimmers became Honorable Mention All-Americans on day two of the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, IN.

"Today, Issara Schmidt was amazing," said Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "She put together the meet of the year at the completely right time. She finished second in prelims and sixth in finals to make NYU history as the first freshman women's diving All-American!"

Schmidt finished second in the women's one-meter diving morning preliminaries with a score of 416.55. She followed up with 426.35 points in the finals to place sixth and claim All-America honors in her first trip to the NCAA Championships.

In 2020, Carmen White was set to compete on the boards for NYU before COVID-19 canceled the NCAA Championships. Each diver was awarded All-America honors in lieu of the cancellation, making Schmidt the first NYU women's diver to become an All-American after competing at the event.

NYU's relay teams had a successful day, as the foursome of Ajay Watanakun, Alec Reimon, David Basin and John Piccinic qualified for the evening session in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay. They came in 14th after the consolation finals (1:21.48) as Reimon's 20.21-second finish on the second leg was the fastest of the group.

"Overall, we had a very strong day and I'm happy with our performance," said Head Swimming Coach Trevor Miele. "It was awesome to see two freshman (swimmers) score points tonight and have our relays perform very well."

The women's 200 free relay team—Nika Kouznetsova, Maia McAllister, Isabel Oldham and Jessica Flynn—improved on their prelims time, taking 11th in the evening session with a 1:34.16 result. It was the second leg that posted the fastest time for the women as well with McAllister clocking in at 23.61 seconds.

In the women's 400-yard medley relay, NYU won the consolation final as Flynn, Kouznetsova, Jolie Le Fauve and Isabella Brosvik completed the race in 3:45.27 to take ninth overall and secure Honorable Mention All-America accolades.

The pair of rookie swimmers to score points for the Violets were Julianna Sosnowski in the women's 400 IM and Nathaniel Yeoh in the men's 200 free. Sosnowski placed 14th after the consolation finals with a time of 4:26.59 to score three points for NYU. Yeoh claimed 13th overall after completing his evening race in 1:38.79.

"We seem to be getting stronger as the meet goes on and I'm excited for tomorrow!" Miele added.

NYU's women sit in 14th (out of 34) as a team after two days of competition with 56 points. Kenyon College tops the women's leaderboard with 248 points.

The Violet men are currently 15th out of 38 teams with 43 points. University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Emory University leads the men's side with 243 points.

Tomorrow's action begins at 10am with the 200-yard butterfly kicking things off. The 100-yard backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 800 freestyle relay and men's one-meter diving also take place on the third day of the Championships.
