Cinque Stephens of men's basketball and
Hassan Khan of wrestling were named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for their performances during the week of December 5-11.
Stephens had the best week of his career as the Violets won both of their contests and improved to 9-0 on the season. The junior guard scored a career-high 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor and 8-of-10 from deep, adding six rebounds and four assists, in a 98-62 victory at York College on Wednesday (Dec. 7). His eight made three-pointers tied the single-game program record while the team's 22 made threes and 50 three-point attempts also set new single-game standards.
The Dallas native followed that up with an even more impressive outing, again establishing a career high in scoring with 33 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the field, 2-of-6 from distance and 7-of-8 from the stripe in a 138-92 home win over Hunter College. Stephens added six rebounds, a career-high five steals and two assists while the team's 138 points set a single-game program record and are the fifth-most in a game in Division III this year.
Khan helped the
14th-ranked wrestling team to a split at the New Jersey City University Wrestling Quad on Saturday (Dec. 10), recording a pair of falls at 157. He pinned WPI's Caden Crist in 2:39 in the Violets' 38-12 victory before winning via fall against Johnson & Wales University's Williams Hughes in 40 seconds. NYU lost to the sixth-ranked Wildcats 36-12 as Khan accounted for half of the Violets' points.
The award is the second of the season for men's basketball and first of Stephens' career. Khan also collected the first Athlete of the Week of his career and the fourth of the season for NYU wrestling.
