#8 Women's Volleyball Wins Two at UAA Round Robin

Take Regular-Season Crown and Top Seed for UAA Championship

The New York University's eighth-ranked women's volleyball team won both of its matches and captured the regular-season University Athletic Association (UAA) title after two dominant performances in the final UAA Round Robin in Rochester, NY, on Sunday.

NYU finished UAA Round Robin play with an overall 6-1 record (18-4 overall), which gives the Violets the #1 seed when they host the UAA Championship on Friday and Saturday, November 4-5.

"I feel our team really elevated itself to this stage," said Head Coach Andrew Brown

In their first match of the day, the Violets swept the University of Rochester with set scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-18. They coupled that with a five-set victory against sixth-ranked Emory University later in the afternoon, recording set scores of 25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 17-25, 15-9.

NYU immediately took control in the first set against Rochester, posting a massive 13-4 run with kills by Ella Weider, Haley Holz, Gabriella Spaethling, Taylor Odum, and Olivia Lewandowski. The Violets recorded a .364 hitting percentage and held the Yellowjackets to .000.

Rochester kept it closer in the second set, knotting the Violets at 7-7. However, a kill by Holz set off a 7-3 run to place the Violets firmly in the lead. The Yellowjackets were unable to return an answering run, giving NYU the opportunity to go on and win the second set.

In the final set, Rochester managed to hold NYU to a match-low .064, but it wasn't enough to keep the Violets from making an 11-3 run to pull ahead. A kill by Odum ended the match.

Holz led the Violets with 13 kills, followed by Weider at 10. Dominique Drust posted her sixth double-double of the season with 15 assists and 11 digs. Ava Launsbach had 14 assists and Lindsey Hirano put up 23 digs.

A few hours later, NYU returned to the Rochester court to face off against Emory. Launsbach recorded a service ace to start the first set, just the beginning of a gritty battle between the Violets and Eagles. Keeping within just one point of each other for most of the set, they squads were tied at 23-23. Finally, Hirano's  service ace and Spaethling's kill clinched NYU's first-set victory.

Tied 9-9 in the second set, the Violets broke away on an 11-3 run bolstered by two kills apiece by Lewandowski and Spaethling. The Eagles couldn't close the gap and the Violets took the set.

After a 13-13 tie, three kills by Spaethling and two from Holz lifted NYU to a 6-1 run and five-point advantage in the third set. However, a 6-0 run by the Eagles put them in front to stay.

Emory utilized a 14-6 run to secure the fourth set and deadlock the match.

NYU locked into a new gear in the fifth set, using a 7-2 run to force Emory into a timeout. However, the Violets continued their strong play until Leela Anvekar's kill ended the match.

Spaethling, Lewandowski and Holz all had double-digit kills, while Launsbach and Drust posted double-doubles in assists and digs. Hirano put up 19 digs.

"We battled a lot of adversity in our Emory match, but as a team found unbelievable ways to overcome and reset going into the deciding fifth set," Brown explained. "I want to also give a shout-out to Lindsey on her 1,000 career dig that occurred in our match against Rochester."

The Violets will take a break from UAA play to face Stockton University on Senior Day in Brooklyn on Friday, October 21.
