The New York University Women's Soccer Team had to wait nearly a month, but the Violets finally got their opportunity to face Mount St. Mary College and they made the most of it.
Originally scheduled for September 1, but postponed due to heavy rain and flooding, the teams met on Monday, September 27, and NYU came away with the 2-0 victory in Newburgh, NY.
The win was the fourth straight for the Violets (5-2), and it didn't take long to grab the lead. Just 16:15 into the contest,
Kelli Keady (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) put NYU ahead with an unassisted tally.
NYU held that lead through halftime, but increased it almost immediately as
Sam March (Glastonbury, CT/Kingswood Oxford School) also scored unassisted just six seconds into the second half.
That was all the scoring the Violets would need, as NYU goalkeeper
Riley Felsher (Pennington, NJ/Princeton Day School) held the Knights (2-3-2) scoreless, turning away the only two shots she faced. Felsher earned her fourth shutout in a row as NYU hasn't allowed a goal since September 12.
"It was great to get another road win," said Head Coach
Michele Canning. "The players did a good job of showing up focused and energized. They fought hard in what was a physical match until the end."
Overall, NYU out-shot Mount St. Mary 27-4 and 17-2 in shots on goal.
The Violets return to action this Wednesday, September 29, when they host Muhlenberg College at Gaelic Park in the Bronx. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
