Riding a five-game shutout streak, the New York University Women's Soccer Team traveled to Cleveland, OH, to open the University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, October 2. The Spartans (9-0-0, 1-0-0), who are currently ranked 11th nationally by the
United Soccer Coaches, remained undefeated on the season with a 3-1 victory.
Both sides were aggressive in the first half, attempting 10 shots apiece, but CWRU opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Sydney Schenk led Christina Hickson up the left flank and fired a shot past NYU keeper
Riley Felsher (Pennington, NJ/Princeton Day School) for a 1-0 lead.
Schenk and Hickson connected again 13 minutes later when Schenk's attempt banged off the post and Hickson finished it off to put the Spartans up 2-0. That score held up at intermission with both goalkeepers logging three saves across the opening 45 minutes of play.
The Violets (6-3-0, 0-1-0) out-shot CWRU 8-5 in the second half and got on the board in the 79th minute when
Gabriella Funk (Fremont, CA/Irvington) converted a penalty kick to cut New York's deficit in half, 2-1.
It was Funk's team-leading fifth tally of the season, but the Spartans responded four minutes later as Anika Washburn netted her UAA-leading 10th score of the year to put the game away.
Felsher notched a career-high six saves in the loss, while
Kelli Keady (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) led the team with four shots.
NYU's next game is its final non-Association bout of the season, traveling to Galloway, NJ, to play Stockton University on Tuesday, October 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
