NYU Won Two of Three Matches on Friday

Official Results

The New York University wrestling team won two of three head-to-head duals at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Dual Championships on Friday, January 10, at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Lexington, KY.

NYU, ranked #14 in the nation by the NWCA, won its preliminary-round matchup over Alma College, 45-10.

Tyler Crew (St. Marys, GA/Camden County), competing at 125, got things started for the Violets by recording a fall at the 4:55 mark.

Trent Furman (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood Regional) (133) followed that up by recording a quick fall (1:02).

After a win by Alma, Evan Drill (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) (149) posted a technical fall, 17-0, over his opponent.

Izaake Zuckerman (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) (174) had the only major decision of the morning for NYU, winning his bout 12-0.

Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) (157) and Jack La Corte (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) (197) each earned victories by forfeit. Scott DuPont (Holmdel. NJ/Holmdel) (184) produced a fall at the 2:48 mark and then Will Ortman (Hopewell Valley, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) (285) ended the proceedings with a fall of his own at 3:25.

Following the victory, NYU moved into the championship bracket where it faced #5 University of Mount Union.

Crew once again led off with a victory, this time a 4-1 decision to give NYU an early lead. But, losses at 133 and 141 pounds allowed Mount Union to go in front.

But, NYU then won three straight matches to re-take the lead. Drill came up with a 10-4 major decision victory. Lyons won by injury only 4:46 into his match, defeating Antwon Pugh who was ranked second nationally. Then Cole Karam (Bath, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) (165) won by decision 9-7.

After Mount Union captured the 174-pound contest, DuPont tallied another fall (2:15) to seal the win as NYU went on to a 21-19 victory, marking the first time in program history that NYU had advanced through the preliminary and first rounds of the tournament with a pair of victories.

"We've come out here to this tournament many times, and usually without our full squad," explained Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "This time we have everyone healthy and ready to go, and it's good to have success."

NYU then moved on to the quarterfinals and faced #4 Loras College.

Furman produced NYU's first victory with an 8-7 decision. Drill followed suit with a 5-2 decision to record his third win of the day. Lyons' 3-0 decision over fifth-ranked Brandon Murray gave NYU a 9-6 lead.

However, Loras won the next three bouts to build a 18-9 lead. La Corte stopped the bleeding with a 5-3 win, but Loras' Wyatt Wreidt took the heavyweight bout to secure its 21-12 win.

Through the first day of the tournament, NYU out-pointed its opponents 78-50.

"Our guys wrestled their hearts out today. They were impressive going against the best teams and the best wrestlers in the country," Luce said. "We have a bunch of freshmen and sophomores in our lineup who weren't intimidated, and that's a credit to our veteran guys like Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) and Evan Drill (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) who've been here before and provide great leadership."

NYU will return to the mat on Saturday, January 11, at 9:00am against #10 North Central College.
