Bout-by-Bout Results
The New York University wrestling team, ranked #15 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Poll, was defeated by #12 The College of New Jersey on Saturday, January 4, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.
NYU (1-1) won only two of the 10 bouts, both by fall, and fell to the Lions (4-1) by a score of 26-12.
On a day when NYU honored its graduation seniors, it was 157-pound senior
Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) and sophomore
Izaake Zuckerman (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) who produced the winning results.
Lyons, who finished as runner-up at last weekend's Citrus Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, FL, wasted little time in pinning his opponent, Matthew Sacco, on Saturday. The bout did not get out of the first period as the winning time came at just 2:47.
Zuckerman, who produced a third-place finish at the Citrus Invite, took a bit more time in recording his pin against two-time All-American Daniel Kilroy. The 174-pound wrestler finished off his opponent in a time of 4:07.
In addition to Lyons, the other seniors who were honored before the match included
Maykel Dolorit (Miami, FL/Southwest Miami),
Evan Drill (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville),
Cole Karam (Bath, PA/Bethlehem Catholic),
Jack La Corte (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy), and
Dylan Watson (Virginia Beach, VA/Frank W. Cox).
"This senior group will be tough to say good-bye to," said Senior Assistant Coach
Corey Luce. "They've done a lot of winning for us in their years at NYU, and it was directly attributed to their hard work ethic and great attitude that they brought to the wrestling room every day. They will be hard to replace, but I'm sure they will all be successful in the next chapter of their lives."
The squad returns to action on Friday and Saturday, January 10-11, at the NWCA National Dual Championships in Lexington, KY.
