Wrestlers Sweep Three Matches at Mid-Winter Classic

Haberli Records 300th Win as NYU Head Coach

Mid-Winter Classic Results (DOC)

The New York University wrestling team, ranked #9 in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), recorded three victories, including the 300th of Head Coach Bruce Haberli's NYU career, on Saturday, January 18.

Competing at the Mid-Winter Classic, hosted by Penn College in Williamsport, PA, NYU defeated McDaniel College (39-12), Johns Hopkins University (35-15) and Gettysburg College (38-7). NYU is now 7-4 in dual meets this season, and Haberli's NYU career record stands at 302-193-3.

Now in his 25th season at NYU, Haberli also recorded 49 wins as head coach at NCAA Division I Manhattan College.

"It was nice to be able to celebrate Bruce's 300th win today," said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "He's accomplished a lot in his Hall of Fame career and this is just another milestone for him and our program."

The opening victory against McDaniel resulted in Haberli's 300th win, as NYU won eight of the 10 bouts. Johnathan Keltz (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) (125) and Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) (157) recorded falls, while Dylan Kull (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) (133), Cole Karam (Bath, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) (165) and Luke Brantly (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) (184) produced technical falls.

NYU again won eight bouts against Johns Hopkins. Kull, Jason Geyer (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) (141) and William Ortman (285) all pinned their opponents. A technical fall was recorded by Lyons.

In the final match of the day, Patrick Lockwood (Minneapolis, MN/Washburn Senior) (125), Karam, Izzy Fox (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) (197), and Ortman recorded falls.

"It was good to see guys like Dylan Kull (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) and Luke Brantly (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) go 3-0," Luce added. "They work hard in the room and it was their time to shine today. Also a great job by Izzy with two wins and a pin."

It was their day.

It was Haberli's day.

It was a special day for NYU Wrestling.

Or, as Haberli put it, "it was awesome."

NYU's grapplers return to the mat next Saturday, January 25, when they compete in a tri-meet at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.
