Women's Soccer Defeated by #16 Johns Hopkins

Violets suffer their first loss of the season

The New York University women's soccer team dropped its first game of the 2019 campaign, falling 3-0 to Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, September 8, in Hoboken, NJ.

NYU (3-1) allowed two first-half goals to the Blue Jays (3-1-1), who are ranked #16 by the United Soccer Coaches, and was never able to claw back from the deficit.

Rachel Jackson struck first for the Blue Jays, finding the back of the net assisted by Riley O'Toole, in the sixth minute. Jackson's teammate, Emily Maheras, doubled the Hopkins lead in the 12th minute when she booted a penalty kick past NYU goalkeeper junior Meghan Marhan (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge).

Johns Hopkins tacked on one last goal in the 71st minute from a Carly Lupton-Smith header to secure the 3-0 victory.

"Hopkins was an excellent team and they exposed some things that we need to keep working on," said Head Coach Michele Canning. "Our players fought hard and we will look to make improvements this week at practice."

Sophomore Lila Keltz (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) led the Violets in shots with two, not far behind were sophomore Tori Bianco (Omaha, NE/Elkhorn South) and junior Nalani Ogawa (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island) who each tabbed one.

The Violets return to action on Sunday, September 15, to open up the home portion of the 2019 schedule against St. Joseph's College- Long Island. Kickoff against the Golden Eagles is slated for noon.
