The New York University women's soccer team continued its winning ways, improving to 3-0 on the young season, as it shutout St. John Fisher College 2-0 on Saturday, September 7, at the Stevens Engineering Cup in Hoboken, NJ.
NYU controlled the majority of the game, out-shooting the Cardinals 16-5 overall. The squads were tied in shots on goal with three each.
The first tally for NYU came in the 77th minute when senior Jade Keane (Morgan Hill, CA/Saint Francis) played a ball down the line and knocked a shot in off of St. John Fisher (1-2) goalkeeper Kayla Shutts' hands. Keane's goal was assisted by junior Sam March (Glastonbury, CT/Kingswood Oxford School).
Sophomore Ellie Marks (Seattle, WA/University Prep) recorded her first goal of the season on a breakaway down the right side, deking Shutts in the 87th minute to increase the lead. March led the Violets in shots with five, while senior Alex Benedict (Avon, CT/Avon) notched four.
"We weren't pleased with our first-half performance," said Head Coach Michele Canning. "We talked about sharpening up technically and making sure our movement was quicker."
Junior goalkeeper Meghan Marhan posted the shutout, the 10th of her career. She saved all three opportunities she faced.
"I think we improved on some key movements and were able to secure the win in the second half," Canning added.
The Violets return to action on Sunday, when they take on Johns Hopkins University to close out the Stevens Engineering Cup. Kickoff against the Blue Jays is slated for 3:00pm.
