Women's Volleyball Wins A Pair on Friday Night

Violets Defeat Gettysburg and Moravian in New Jersey

The New York University women's volleyball team completed its first two matches of the Kean Tournament on Friday, September 13, in Union, NJ. The Violets swept Gettysburg College in the first match (25-18, 25-20, 25-14) and Moravian College (25-17, 25-15, 25-8) in the final match of the night.

The Violets (8-1) got off to a strong start in the opener against Gettysburg, though the Bullets (4-6) did get stronger as the match continued.

"I thought tonight we played strong, complete sets," said Head Coach Andrew Brown."On the outside, Haley Holz (Palatine, IL /Palatine) and Caroline Rapp (Boynton Beach, FL/American Heritage School) did well all the way around. Abby Ausmus (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day School) contributed very well offensively and defensively."

Holz led NYU with a team-high 13 kills. A pair of Violets finished with double-digit digs: freshman Nicole Dao (Bethesda, MD/The Academy of Holy Cross) (14) and junior Jacqueline Kupeli (Danville, CA/Monte Vista) (14).

In the matchup with Moravian, the squads were evenly matched through the first game, with NYU earning the 25-17 win. In game two however, the Violets jumped out to a 12-6 lead and the Greyhounds never got closer than six the rest of the way.

NYU again raced out to a 10-3 lead in the final game and never looked back, securing the 25-8 win.

Holz along with senior Kelsey Kraetz (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) led NYU with a team-high seven kills. Kupeli tallied 20 digs in the second match, totaling 34 for the day.

"Another strong performance in the quick turn-around against Moravian. The whole team contributed to a very successful first day and we look to continue tomorrow with our first match against Lycoming," Brown added.

The Violets will return to action on Saturday when they close out the Kean Tournament with matches against Lycoming College at noon and host Kean University at 2:00pm.
