Women's Volleyball Wins Season Opener

Violets Sweep Buffalo State at Home

The New York University women's volleyball team opened the 2019 season by sweeping Buffalo State College 3-0 at the Violets' Brooklyn Athletic Facility on Friday, August 20.

In the campaign opener for both squads, the Violets defeated the Bengals by scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-11.

NYU took a 4-0 lead and never trailed in the first set, then overcame an early 2-0 deficit in the second. The middle set was tied 7-7 when the Violets scored the next two points to take the lead for good, ending the frame on a 13-3 run.

It was more of the same in the final set as NYU tallied the first three points and never fell behind.

"Good start for our squad. They've been practicing hard and it showed on the court tonight," said Head Coach Andrew Brown.

Gretchen Kincade (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) had a team-high eight kills, while Haley Holz (Palatine, IL /Palatine) and Abby Ausmus (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day School) each had seven. Ausmus also added seven block assists.

The Violets totaled 13 blocks to only one for the Bengals.

"We've been working really hard at establishing a physical front row. It was great to see that work pay off," Brown explained.

Jacqueline Kupeli (Danville, CA/Monte Vista) led the way for NYU with 15 digs while Nicole Dao (Bethesda, MD/The Academy of Holy Cross) (21) and Veronica Johnson (Santa Monica, CA/Santa Monica) (15) each recorded double-digit assists.

Overall, 13 of the team's 18 players saw action.

"I was pleased to see so many players contributing," Brown added. "That's a good sign as we move forward."

The Violets are right back in action on Saturday when they face Wheaton College at 12pm and Pratt Institute at 4pm back in Brooklyn.
