Men's Basketball Falls Short Against Emory

Violets Rally Late, But Remain Winless in UAA Action

The New York University men's basketball team rallied late, but ultimately fell short and was defeated 75-67 by visiting Emory University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Sunday, February 3, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

Emory's win improves its overall record to 16-4 and the Eagles are now 7-2 in UAA play and are tied for first place with Washington University in St. Louis. NYU dropped to 6-14 on the season and is 0-9 in UAA action.

Jordan Harris put NYU ahead 4-2 with a layup just under four minutes into the game, but Emory answered with the next 11 points and never looked back.

The Violets did get within two points later in the first half. However, the Eagles closed on an 11-1 run and led 40-24 at halftime.

NYU controlled most of the second half, cutting the margin to 10 with 16:33 to play and made it a one- possession game on a layup from Harris, which made the score 53-51 with 8:09 to play.

Emory never let its lead get smaller than two and drained all six of its free throws in the final 41 seconds to clinch the win and make the final margin eight points.

Jimmy Martinelli led three Violets in double figures with a game-high-tying 17 points. Bobby Hawkinson came off the bench to score 16, while Dom Cristiano chipped in with 10 points and added a team-best eight rebounds.

Matthew Schner scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Emory.

The Violets continue their four-game homestand on Friday night when they host Case Western Reserve University back at the Sportsplex. Tip-off against the Spartans is slated for 8pm.
