Wrestling Faces Off Against Centenary College

16th-ranked NYU Wins Road Matchup

The New York University wrestling team defeated Centenary University in a head-to-head meet in Hackettstown, NJ, on Friday, December 6.

NYU, ranked 16th in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), won the matchup 33-9. 

The dominant Violets squad managed to take a shutout into the seventh match of the day. Kade Loughney (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central), competing at 174, got things started for NYU by recording a fall at the 3:19 mark. 

"Our guys wrestled aggressively from the start," said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "I'm very proud of the way we competed today."

Miguel Ruiz (Madera, CA/Madera) (184) was next to go for NYU, winning his match by decision (9-6).

Scott DuPont (Holmdel. NJ/Holmdel) (197) followed this up by also taking his match by decision (9-3). 

Will Ortman (Hopewell Valley, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central), competing at 285, had the only major decision of the night after topping his opponent 13-2.

Tyler Crew (St. Marys, GA/Camden County) was a 6-5 winner at 125, followed by Trent Furman (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood Regional) taking a 9-4 decision at 133.

After consecutive wins by Centenary, Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) posted a fall (4:04) at 157 and then Cole Karam (Bath, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) ended the proceedings with a fall of his own (3:17) at 165.

"We had some holes to fill with some late lineup changes and guys stepped up and did their jobs," Luce added.
