Women's Basketball Defeats Baruch

Violets Topple Bearcats 103-50

The New York University women's basketball team defeated Baruch College 103-50 on Wednesday afternoon, November 27, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

The host Violets (5-1), who never trailed in the contest, got off to a quick start. They scored the first basket, went on an opening 17-4 run and led 25-9 after the first quarter.

The lead steadily increased throughout the second quarter, and Janean Cuffee's (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) three-pointer with just seconds remaining gave the Violets a 57-21 halftime advantage.

Cuffee scored all of her game-high 16 points in the first half.

NYU continued to increase its lead in the second half. The advantage over the Bearcats (5-1) rose to 48 points on several occasions before the third quarter ended with the Violets ahead 83-36.

In the final quarter, NYU stretched its lead to a game-high 55 points, 102-47, on Annie Carlile's (Mont Belvieu, TX/Barbers Hill) three-pointer with just over one minute remaining.

The final point total for NYU was the team's highest since a 104-59 victory over Alfred State University on November 18, 2006.

In addition to Cuffee, four more Violets scored in double figures: Meghan McLaughlin (Mount Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) (career-high 12), Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) (11), Katie Foos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) (11), and Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) (10).

"Our whole squad has been working really hard in practice," revealed Head Coach Meg Barber. "It was nice for our starters to come out of the game the way they did and then to have the opportunity to get everyone on the floor today. We had contributions from everyone."

All 16 players who were dressed saw action, with 14 scoring at least three points.

Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) contributed a season-high 11 rebounds, while Barrett finished with eight assists and four steals.

The  Violets return to action this Sunday, December 1, when they travel to Middletown, CT, for a game against Wesleyan University. Tip-off is set for 3:00pm
