The New York University men's basketball team fell to host University of New England 72-58 in the Championship Game of the Hampton Inn Jim Beaudry Classic on Sunday, November 17, in Biddeford, ME.
The Violets (1-3) had advanced to the Championship Game with an 81-73 win over Mitchell College on Saturday.
After trailing by as many as 15 points in the first half on Sunday,
Harrison Whatley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Porter Gaud) pulled NYU within 39-34 at halftime following his dunk with 36 seconds remaining.
The score was tied several times early in the second half, but the Nor'easters (3-1) scored seven straight points to break a 47-47 deadlock and the Violets were never able to catch them.
"The game of basketball rewards toughness," said Head Coach
Dagan Nelson. "They were tougher than us today and we deserved the outcome."
Ethan Feldman (New York, NY/The Salisbury School) led the Violets with 16 points.
Miles Somerville (Bowie, MD/Georgetown Prep) (13) also scored in double figures.
Nick Macarchuk (Alamo, CA/St. Thomas Moore Prep) led NYU with eight rebounds and
Jimmy Martinelli (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) added seven.
Both Somerville and Macarchuk were named to the All-Classic Team.
The Violets return to the court this weekend when they host the annual NYU Tip-Off Classic at the Sportsplex in Manhattan. The hosts will face Wells College at 5:00pm on Saturday, November 23.
