The New York University women's volleyball team defeated Montclair State University in three close games on Thursday, October 10, in Brooklyn, NY.
The Violets (16-5) posted game scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-16 en route to the victory over the visiting Red Hawks (14-5).
Abby Ausmus (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day School) led the way for NYU with a team-high 10 kills. Nicole Dao (Bethesda, MD/The Academy of Holy Cross) had 15 assists, while Jacqueline Kupeli (Danville, CA/Monte Vista) contributed a team-high 11 digs.
"Today was a good test for us as a team," said Head Coach Andrew Brown. "Montclair is a strong team in our region, so to win in straight sets is a big deal for us."
Early on in the first set, NYU jumped out to a 15-5 lead. The visiting Red Hawks went on a 15-6 run to pull within two of the Violets, but NYU rattled off three points to go up 1-0.
In the second set, the teams traded the lead several times. Things started swinging back into the Violets' favor, however, as they rallied back from multiple deficits en route to a late victory.
Trying to push a fourth set, the Red Hawks came out hard in the third, quickly going up 10-9. The Violets were able to rally back, going on a 4-1 run to secure the victory.
"Amy Zhang (Cary, NC/Green Hope) had a serving run in the third set that really helped the effort," added Brown.
The Violets return to action this Saturday, October 12, when they travel to Farmingdale, NY. NYU will face the host Rams at 11:00am and Misericordia University at 1:00 pm.
