Men's Volleyball Wins Home Opener

Violets Defeat Ramapo in Straights Sets

The New York University men's volleyball team defeated Ramapo College in straight sets on Wednesday, January 23, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

NYU improved to 1-3 with its 25-20, 25-17, 25-21 victory over the Roadrunners, who remain winless through three matches this season.

"It was good to have the guys respond to a tough weekend with a nice win here at home," said Head Coach Jose Pina. "We started a bit slow, but turned it around and took control of the match."

Ramapo led 10-6 early, but the Violets responded with nine-straight points courtesy of a strong service game from Alex Li, who recorded four aces during the run. The Roadrunners cut the lead to three on several occasions, but could get no closer as the Violets took the opening set 25-20, clinching it on a Ramapo attack error.

In the second set, NYU raced out to a 7-2 lead, but the Roadrunners did not go away. The Violets led the whole set, however, and scored the final four points to win the frame 25-21 on another Ramapo attack error.

The third set went back and forth until Ramapo went on a run to take a 14-11 advantage. From there, it was all NYU as the Violets scored four straight to take the lead and led by as many as five, before ultimately clinching the set and the match on a kill from Elijah Fichtel.

Li led all players with 10 kills, while Evan Lindley chipped in with nine. Matin Bikdeli and Ryan Whealen split the setting duties, recording 19 and 11, respectively

"It was good to have six freshmen play and get solid experience," added Pina. "Two guys made their collegiate debuts and we saw contributions from everyone. Our upperclassmen did a good job keeping the young players focused and steady."

The Violets return to the court on Friday, February 1, when it travels to Springfield, MA, to take on Vassar College in the opening round of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic.
