Jacob Lill's pin of Centenary University's 's Justin Hopman in the final bout of the evening lifted the New York University wrestling team to a 23-18 victory over the Cyclones on Friday, January 18, at the host's Brooklyn Athletic Facility (BAF) in Brooklyn, NY.
In a tight match throughout, NYU (10-1) trailed Centenary (1-6) 18-17 going into the heavyweight bout. Lill left little to chance by pinning his opponent in just 1:16 to clinch the victory for the home squad.
"Great win for our team and for Jacob who put us over the top," said Head Coach
Bruce Haberli. "We needed him to pull out the victory for us and he didn't waste much time doing it."
NYU, currently ranked #19 in the nation by the National Coaches Wrestling Association (NWCA), took an early 14-3 lead in the match before Centenary took the next three bouts and managed a 15-14 advantage.
Jackson Kligerman (184) gave the lead back to NYU with a decision victory, but the Cyclones' Etiini Udott followed with a decision win over
Jack La Corte to make the final bout a winner-take-all.
Also contributing to NYU's victory was
Will Crisco (133), who produced a major decision win, and
Evan Drill (141) and
Sean Lyons (149), each of whom posted technical falls.
"We were tested today and we passed the test," Haberli explained. "We can only enjoy it for a little while, though, because we have to get right back on the mat tomorrow."
NYU is back in action on Saturday when the team hosts Hunter College at the BAF. The Senior Day match is scheduled to begin at 10:00am.
