The New York University softball team defeated host Rutgers University-Newark 6-2 in the quarterfinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship on Wednesday, May 9, in Newark NJ.
Sixth-seeded NYU improved its season record to 21-20, while third-seeded Rutgers-Newark University's season ended with a 21-17 record.
NYU scored a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from
Ashley Mains and increased the lead to 3-0 in the second on a two-run home run off the bat of
Morgan Clemens.
RBIs from
Mary Tindall and
Courtney Friday in the third inning made the advantage 5-0 before a run-scoring single courtesy of
Kymber Yamamoto in the in fifth inning put the visitors ahead 6-0.
A pair of unearned runs from the Scarlet Raiders in the seventh made the final score 6-2.
Karissa Zubulake started on the mound for NYU and went the distance, scattering 10 hits and not allowing an earned run to improve to 7-3 on the season.
NOTABLES:
- Clemens' home run was her second of the season. The sophomore became the seventh Violet to hit multiple home runs this season.
- Zubulake's ERA is a team-best 1.83.
- Mains' RBI was her 21st of the season, which ranks second on the squad.
**The Violets, who earned a spot in the Championship semifinals with the victory, were unable to continue in the tournament due to conflicts with New York University's final exams schedule.
