Baseball Sets New Wins Record with DH Split

Violets Now 24-8

The New York University baseball team split a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader with host Brandeis University on Saturday, April 21, in Waltham, MA. NYU took the first game 18-2 before dropping game two 7-5.

The Violets' record now stands at 24-8 this season, which sets a program record for most wins in a season since NYU brought back baseball as a Division III program in 2014 following a 42-year hiatus from Division I status. Brandeis is now 3-20 overall.

GAME ONE RECAP:

The NYU bats picked up right where they left off following Friday's 12-7 victory over the Judges as the Violets scored five runs in the first inning and led 12-0 by the middle of the third inning. Colman Hendershot, who hit three home runs in Friday's win, hit two more in Saturday's game-one victory as the Violets cruised to their fourth UAA win of the season. Scott Hilbrandt and Coltrane Tait also hit home runs for NYU, while Francis Prior joined Hendershot and Tait with three hits each.

Ford Ladd allowed just two runs over six innings of work while striking out seven Judges to improve to 5-2 on the season. Ryan Allen came in to relieve Ladd and pitched a perfect seventh inning to finish off the win.

GAME TWO RECAP:

The Violets once again struck first as Tait doubled home Ryan McLaughlin in the top of the first inning.

The Judges tied the game in the bottom of the third and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hendershot, NYU's RBI machine, singled home Prior in the sixth inning as the Violets also took advantage of a Brandeis error to tie the game at 3-3.

Three Judges' runs in the home half of the sixth put the hosts back in front 6-3 before a 2-RBI single from Cooper Halpern cut the margin to one in the top of the eighth.

Brandeis added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and the Violets weren't able to score again.

Hendershot, Tait and Isaac Martinez each had two hits in the loss.

UP NEXT:

The Violets and Judges complete their four-game series tomorrow in Waltham. First pitch is slated for 11am.
