Men's Basketball Wins at John Jay

Violets Defeat Bloodhounds to Improve to 3-1

The New York University men's basketball team defeated host John Jay College 63-51 at The Doghouse on Tuesday, November 20, in Manhattan.

NYU (3-1) won with its defense on Tuesday night, allowing the Bloodhounds (2-1) to shoot just 29.8% (17-for-57) from the floor and 18.2% (4-for-22) from three-point range. The 51 points allowed were the least by the Violets in almost exactly two years when they defeated John Jay by almost exactly the same score, 63-50, on November 22, 2016.

"We played a full 40 minutes of our defensive identity tonight," said Head Coach Dagan Nelson. "When you hold a team to shooting numbers like we did this evening, you'll always have a chance to win."

Offensively, junior captain Jimmy Martinelli led the way for the Violets, scoring 17 points to go along with a game-high-tying 13 rebounds. He drained 5-of-6 attempts from three-point range to help NYU bounce back from Sunday's loss to Baruch College, its first setback of the season.

Jule Brown also rose to the occasion on Tuesday, scoring 16 points in 38 minutes of action. The senior captain was 3-for-4 from long range as the Violets shot 8-for-13 (61.5%) from deep in the win.

"Jimmy and Jule hit some big shots for us tonight," added Nelson.

Essien Epps scored a game-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds for the Bloodhounds.

The Violets return to action on Saturday when they host the College of Staten Island in their third-straight game against an opponent from the CUNYAC. NYU and the Dolphins are slated to tip off at 2pm at the Sportsplex.
