Women's Soccer Fit to Be Tied

NYU and Emory Finish With 1-1 Draw

The New York University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Emory University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Friday, October 12, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The host Violets (6-4-2, 2-0-1 UAA) and Eagles (8-4-1, 0-2-1 UAA) played 110 minutes, with all of the scoring coming within an eight-minute span of the first half.

Emory scored first in the contest when Madison Phaneuf scored on a free kick from just outside the box at 26:12 of the first half.

A referee's call also aided the second goal, as Maddie Peña was able to connect on a penalty kick when she was obstructed inside the box at 34:08. Her blast past the Eagles' goalkeeper, Danielle Staffin, tied the game at 1-1.

Neither team could muster much offensively the rest of the way, with the few good scoring chances going for naught.

Emory ended the game with an 11-7 edge in shots, with both teams managing five on net. The Eagles did have quite an edge, 10-2, on corner kicks.

Both goalkeepers, Staffin and Meghan Marhan for NYU, recorded four saves.

The Violets are right back on the pitch this Sunday, October 14, when they host the University of Rochester in another UAA contest at 1:30pm at Gaelic Park.
