Men's Basketball Drops its Case

Falls to Case Western Reserve in Overtime

The New York University men's basketball team lost a 77-75 overtime decision to Case Western Reserve University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Sunday, January 28, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

Despite falling behind 7-0 and by as many as 13 points in the first half, the Violets (9-8, 2-5) rallied to take its first lead of the game, 64-63, on Cameron Moore's turnaround jumper with 2:43 left.

Jule Brown's layup gave NYU a 68-64 lead, but Case's T.J. Duckett followed with two free throws.

Brown missed the front end of a one-and-one on the Violets' next possession and Case's Antonio Ionadi tied the game on a layup with 24 seconds left.

Both Moore and Brown then missed on potential game-winning shots, and the contest headed into overtime.

Ignas Masiulionis, who scored a game-high 22 points, hit a long three-pointer with 2:18 left in the extra period to give the Spartans (10-8, 4-3) the lead for good.

The Violets did pull within two and had a final chance in the closing seconds, but Moore's three-pointer rimmed out and a pair of attempted tip-ins were unsuccessful.

NYU trailed 34-27 at halftime after shooting  just 38.5% (10-of-26) from the field over the first 20 minutes.

However, the second half began well for the home team as Dom Cristiano's jumper brought the Violets within five. Then, at 15:08, Jimmy Martinelli's three-pointer cut the deficit to four, 44-40.

The Spartans scored the next five points to re-open a nine-point lead. But, the Violets went on a 9-2 run capped by the second of Bobby Hawkinson's consecutive buckets with 10:58 remaining to pull within two.

NYU again got within two, 54-52, on Ethan Feldman's trey at 8:05 and eventually pulled within one, 61-60, on Moore's drive with 4:14 remaining. Then, after Duckett hit a free throw for the Spartans, Moore driving layup gave NYU its first lead.

Feldman led NYU with 16 points, while Moore (15), Cristiano (14) and Martinelli (11) also reached double figures.

Etc....:

- Cristiano led NYU with seven rebounds.

- NYU's previous overtime game resulted in a 74-66 win over Stevens Tech on February 2, 2016.

- Senior guard Ross Udine, NYU's all-time assists leader, suffered an injury in the first half and did not return, playing only 11 minutes.

- Duckett finished with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Violets return to the court on Friday, February 2, when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA, and face host Carnegie Mellon University. Tipoff for the UAA contest is set for 8:00pm.
