The New York University women's basketball team was defeated 83-79 in overtime by #7 University of Rochester in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday, January 21, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
Kaitlyn Read scored a career-high 37 points for the Violets (8-8, 1-4), tied for the fifth-highest one-game total in team history. She also recorded a career-high 10 steals, tied for the fourth-highest total in team annals.
It was a close game throughout, with neither team leading by more than eight points.
The Violets scored the first five points of the contest and didn't trail until the Yellowjackets' 9-0 run gave them a 19-14 lead late in the opening quarter.
Shaye McGoey's three-pointer, however, brought NYU within 19-17 after the first quarter.
Rochester (15-1, 5-0) opened up a pair of seven-point leads in the second quarter and was still leading 34-29 when NYU closed the first half on a 10-0 run and took a 39-34 advantage into the intermission.
The Yellowjackets managed to tie the score at 43-43 midway through the third quarter, but the Violets held on to a 50-49 lead at the end of the session.
Lauren Deming's layup gave the Yellowjackets a brief lead to open the final stanza before Read's three-pointer put the Violets back on top. Then, with the score tied 61-61, NYU scored the next eight points to open up its biggest lead of the game.
That cushion disappeared quickly, as Rochester roared back to score seven unanswered points of its own.
Lauren Brown's free throw gave NYU a 70-68 lead with 50 seconds left to play, but Deming's layup with 14 seconds remaining knotted the score again and when NYU failed to score on its final possession, the game went into overtime.
Rochester quickly gained a four-point lead in the extra session before Read's two free throws tied the game at 76-76 with two minutes left.
Alexandra Leslie's layup with 1:31 left again gave the Yellowjackets the lead, and neither team scored again until
Kayla Patterson went to the line and hit a free throw with 24 ticks remaining.
With 22 seconds left Lauren Foley made two foul shots for Rochester, and that was answered by
Mikaela Pyatt who also made a pair with 14 seconds remaining.
Foley went back to the line a second later and made her first shot, missed the second, but the Yellowjackets gained the offensive rebound and Lizzy Atkinson was sent to the line with eight ticks left. She then made both for the final margin.
