Men's Soccer Fit to Be Tied

Violets and Brooklyn College End in 0-0 Deadlock

The New York University men's soccer team began its 2017 season with a 0-0 tie against Brooklyn College on Friday, September 1, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The Violets had the better of the offensive play, out-shooting the Bulldogs 26-13, but couldn't sneak one past Brooklyn goalkeeper Utku Tanritanir.

In net for the Violets, Grant Engel stopped all five shots he faced, while Tanritanir was forced to make nine save.

NYU took five shots in the first overtime, but were continuously denied. Brooklyn had a 3-1 advantage in shots during the second overtime, but the Violet defense did not break.

The Violets also had a decided 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"We played hard, but just couldn't get the goal we needed. I don't think our shots were challenging enough," said Head Coach Kim Wyant

NOTABLES:

- Robert Shellow and Matteo Carrieri Russo Russo led NYU with five shots each, both putting two of them on net.

- Ahmad Aly took a game-high six shots for Brooklyn.

- The shutout was the first of Engel's career.

"I'm disappointed that we didn't win, but we didn't lose, so I guess that's the good news," Wyant concluded.

The Violets return to action this Sunday, September 3, when they travel to Madison, NJ, to face FDU-Florham. The matchup is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
