Softball Swept at Stevens

Violets Fall 12-4 and 5-4 to Ducks on Road

The New York University softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to the Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, March 29, in Weehawken, NJ.

The Violets (8-6) were defeated 12-4 in the opener and 5-4 in the nitecap.

NYU did take a lead in game one, scoring a run in the top of the first on a home run by Jacqueline Finn.

However, the lead was short-lived as the Ducks (12-6) scored five in the second and three in the third to take a commanding lead.

The Violets did fight back with three in the fifth inning, highlighted by Ashley Mains' two-run triple. But, Stevens came right back with three in the bottom of the frame and then ended it with another run in the sixth.

In the second game, NYU's offense did not get untracked until the seventh inning. Trailing 4-0, the Violets rallied to tie the game. After the first two batters walked, Mains doubled with one out to bring in the first run. Caroline Saccacio followed with a two-run single to bring NYU within one and a Duck error followed to even the score.

However, in the bottom of the seventh, Stevens loaded the bases with one out and received a walk-off walk to complete the sweep.

"We just didn't have it today," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "The pitching was pretty good, but we made some defensive mistakes and could not get the big hit when we needed it."

NOTES:

- Mains finished the day 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

- Rachel Fulton walked twice, stole a base and scored a run in game two.

- The Violets have now lost a season-high three straight games.

"We'll get right back out there tomorrow for practice and then on Friday for our doubleheader and start working towards getting better results," James explained.

NYU returns to action on Friday, March 31, for a doubleheader at SUNY Old Westbury. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
