Softball Team Splits with Rutgers-Newark

Violets Drop Opener 7-6; Rebound with 12-4 Victory

The New York University softball team split its doubleheader with Rutgers-Newark University on Thursday, March 23, at Bohoshy Field in the Bronx, NY.

The Violets (7-3) dropped the opener 7-6, but came back to defeat the Scarlet Raiders (6-6) in the nitecap 12-4.

In the first game, the Violets jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run by Caroline Saccacio. The Scarlet Raiders went ahead with four runs in the top of the second before NYU tied it on RBI hits from Carina Sturm (double) and Diana King (triple) in the bottom of the frame.

Rutgers-Newark scored a tie-breaking run in the fifth and added two more in the sixth for a 7-4 lead.

The Violets rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on Saccacio's double. But, they could not plate a final run and fell short as their four-game winning streak was snapped.

"We made too many mistakes (five errors) and couldn't hold the lead," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "It's a game we should've won and almost did but the comeback fell short."

No comebacks were needed in the second game as the Violets sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first and exploded for 10 runs. Saccacio, Ashley Mains and Allyson Schmus each had two hits in the innings.

"That's a nice way to start a game after a bad loss," James remarked.

The Violets led 11-4 going into the bottom of the fifth. Mains led off with a double and eventually scored on Jacqueline Finn's walk-off single.

"Not a great day overall," James admitted. "But, at least we ended on a positive note."

 GAME 1 NOTES:

- King finished with two hits and scored two runs.

- Scarlett Murphy started for the Violets and took the loss, allowing four earned runs in five innings.

- Cassi Parulis and Finn each contributed a hit. Parulis pitched the final two innings without allowing an earned run.

GAME 2 NOTES:

- Mains finished 4-for-4 and scored three runs.

- Finn and Schmus each had three hits, driving in four and two runs, respectively.

- Karissa Zubulake tossed a complete game for the Violets. She allowed five hits, but no earned runs in picking up her team-high third victory of the season.

The Violets return to action this Saturday for a doubleheader at Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
