The New York University wrestling team was back on the mat at the Mariner Duals on Saturday, December 9, in Kings Point, NY. The event was hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
An injury-depleted NYU squad fell in its first two matches to The College of New Jersey (24-17) and Nassau Community College (34-13) before defeating Hunter College (43-11) in the final matchup of the day. The grapplers' dual record now stands at 4-2.
"I thought we wrestled tough against quality opponents despite having some of our top guys out," said Senior Assistant Coach
Corey Luce. "We are getting healthier, and I think when we put our best lineup out there we are one of the best teams in the nation."
The highlight of the day came in the opening match against TCNJ as returning All-American
Blaise Benderoth defeated Dan Kilroy, the #2-ranked 174-pounder in the nation, 10-2. The bout was the first of the season for Benderoth, who became the first-ever NYU freshman to earn All-America honors last season.
Matt Noble (133 pounds),
Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds) and
Jackson Kligerman (184 pounds) all went 3-0 for NYU.
NOTABLES:
- Noble is now 10-0 on the season.
- Jazikoff's record now stands at 18-2 and he is undefeated against Division III wrestlers this season. The senior captain's final victory of the day was the 119th of his career, which ranks him third in program history.
-
Anthony Calvano (141 pounds) took the mat for the first time this season against Hunter and won via a first-period pin.
"Above all, I'm pleased how guys wrestled up weight classes to benefit the team today," concluded Luce. "
Owen Jones, for example, is a 157-pounder who wrestled at 174 against Hunter and got us a win despite being almost 20 pounds lighter than his opponent."
NYU will get right back on the mat tomorrow when it takes on Johns Hopkins University at 9:30am. Tomorrow's match is part of the Grapple at the Garden and will take place in the theater at Madison Square Garden.
