The New York University men's volleyball team, ranked #15 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), picked up a straight-set victory (25-16, 25-18, 25-15) over York College (NY) on Wednesday night, March 9, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.
The Violets (9-8) dominated the Cardinals (9-12) from start to finish. Additionally, many of NYU's reserves were able to get some key playing time throughout.
"It was nice to see our freshmen get some playing time tonight," said NYU Assistant Coach Karl France. "They played the entire match tonight, figured things out and played well."In the first set,
Patrick Merrick dished out 13 assists as
Chase Klein and
Jake Getz combined for 11 kills en route to the final nine-point advantage.
The second set started slowly for NYU, and the Violets trailed 11-9 at one point. However, NYU recovered behind the stellar play of
Will Kozloski and took seven of the next eight points en route to the seven-point win. The junior opposite notched six kills on nine swings during the set, helped by nine assists from
Jaime Rivera.
The final set went NYU's way by 10 points as Klein and
Ethan Talkov combined for seven kills. Rivera dished out another 14 helpers, as well.
"It was nice to see Jaime and Pat get a chance to play tonight and run the offense since they will miss our upcoming road trip due to Stern requirements," continued France.HIGHLIGHTS:- Klein led all players with 12 kills. The junior outside hitter added three service aces and three digs.
- Talkov finished with five kills on 10 swings with two errors to hit .300. He also led all players with four service aces and tied the match high with three total blocks.
- Getz and Kozloski each registered eight kills.
- Rivera totaled a match-high 23 assists in two sets played.
NYU will return to the court when it travels to the Midwest for four matches. On Saturday, March 12, in Kenosha, WI, the Violets face #3 Carthage College at 11:00 am (CST) and #8 Stevenson University at 4:00 pm (CST). The Violets then face the 10th-ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday, March 13, at 1:00 pm (CST) in Milwaukee. Then, on Thursday night, March 15, in River Forest, IL, NYU faces #13 Dominican University at 7:00 pm (CST).
