Violets Defeat Rochester in Final Contest

The New York University softball team pulled out a 6-5 extra-inning victory over University of Rochester in their final game of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship at the Seminole County Softball Complex in Altamonte Springs, FL, on Sunday, March 13.

The Violets (5-9, 4-6 UAA) fell behind the Yellowjackets (4-10, 2-8) 3-0 before mounting their comeback.

Trailing 3-0 after allowing two runs in the first and one in the third, the Violets tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the fourth...all with two outs. Dakota Damiani began the rally with a leadoff walk, but was still on first with two outs. Allyson Schmus' single was then followed by a Rochester error scoring Damiani. Sage Scheiwiller then tripled down the right field line to tie the score.

NYU went ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Diana King led off with a double and came around to score on a single by Ashley Mains, who eventually came around to score on another Yellowjackets' error.

However, Rochester tied the score in the top of the seventh and the game went into extra innings.

After reliever Cassi Parulis held the Yellowjackets scoreless in the top of the eighth, the Violets pushed one across to win it in the bottom of the frame. The winning rally began when Kahala Bonsignore reached on an error with one out and then was driven in on a single by Scheiwiller and another Rochester error....their seventh and final one of the contest.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- The extra-inning victory was NYU's first in the history of the two-year old varsity program.

- Parulis picked up the victory with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

- Scheiwiller, King and Mains each had two hits.

- Karissa Zubulake started for the Violets, giving up four earned runs and striking out four in 6.1 innings.

The Violets now return from Florida and will host Baruch College in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 17, at the Bahoshy Softball Complex in the Bronx, NY. First pitch will be at 3:00 pm.
