The New York University men's volleyball team, ranked #8 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), fell in four sets (24-26, 25-18, 25-19, 25-16) at #1 Springfield College on Friday night, February 5, in Springfield, MA.
The Violets (3-3) began the night quickly and took the first set over the top-ranked Pride (8-1), before dropping the final three sets.
"It was a really good match and an amazing atmosphere; I think we played pretty well," said NYU Head Coach
Jose Pina. "Springfield's two outsider hitters, and its setter, just played and executed at a higher level tonight."
Nick Benson,
Chase Corbett and
Phil Bueno led NYU on Friday. Benson had a team-high 13 kills and a team-high-tying four digs, while Corbett (10 kills, four blocks) and Bueno (11 kills) had quality nights, as well.
"Phil, Nick and Chase were strong offensively, and Ben [Oxnard] continues to be a difference maker at libero," continued Pina. "If we can continue to play at this pace and level, we should have a pretty good season."
HIGHLIGHTS:-
Chase Klein had six kills and three blocks.
-
Derrick Chiu led the Violets with 38 assists. He also had three blocks and a service ace.
- Ricardo Padilla Ayala led Springfield with 17 kills.
The Violets will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, February 6, in their second and final match of the Morgan Classic. NYU will face the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at 5:30 pm.
