Wrestling Suffers 17-15 Conference Loss at USMMA

NYU Drops to 3-2 in Centennial Competition

Results

The New York University wrestling team, ranked #22 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), suffered its second Centennial Conference defeat of the season, 17-15, on Wednesday night, February 3, at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, NY.

NYU (9-5, 3-2 Centennial) dropped the first bout to fall behind the Mariners (6-7, 3-3) 3-0, but came back to win the next two by decision and take a 6-3 lead. USMMA then claimed the next two wins, also by decision, and NYU trailed 9-6 heading into 165 pounds.

But, Manny Ramirez won his match-up 10-6 to kick off three straight NYU decisions as the squad took a 15-9 lead with just two bouts remaining.

However, Merchant Marine won both of the final two by major decision to come away with the two-point win.

"It was a tough loss, coming up short in the end," said NYU Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "But, the guys that we had in our lineup tonight stepped up and gave us the opportunity to win."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Nathan Pike, ranked #1 at 133 pounds by the NWCA, won his match 4-1.

- Anthony Calvano also picked up a 4-1 decision at 141 pounds.

- Following Ramirez, Adrian Herrera (174 lbs.) and John Messinger (184 lbs.) picked up NYU's final two wins, both by decision.

The grapplers will return to action when they travel to the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, on Saturday, February 6, for a pair of Centennial matches. NYU will face McDaniel College at 12:00 pm and Washington and Lee University at 2:00 pm.
