The New York University men's volleyball team, ranked #11 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), was defeated by #6 Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, February 17, in Hoboken, NJ.
The Violets, who are now 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the United Volleyball Conference (UVC), fell to the Ducks (9-3, 2-2) in straight sets 25-17, 25-23, 25-16.
NYU never led in the first set and trailed by as many as 10.
The second set was much closer, as the Violets had a couple of one-point leads and were tied 23-23 before dropping the final two points.
NYU took its biggest lead of the night, 5-1 early in the third set, but could not hold the lead. Stevens scored the next six points and never trailed again.
Nick Benson led the Violets with a match-high-tying 12 kills, while
Phil Bueno added 10.
HIGHLIGHTS:-
Derrick Chiu led the Violets with a match-high 28 assists.
- Benson added a team-best three service aces.
- Gabe Shankweiler led the Ducks with 12 kills and four service aces.
NYU returns to action next Tuesday, February 23, when the Violets host Vassar College. It will be the home team's first match at its Brooklyn Athletic Facility. The match is set to begin at 7:30 pm.
