Grapplers Wrap Up First Semester with a Pair of Wins

COMPLETE RESULTS

The New York University wrestling team won two matches at the Mariner Duals, hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy, on Saturday, December 10, in King's Point, NY.

NYU, ranked #15 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll, first defeated USMMA 29-11 before knocking off Nassau County Community College, the 2015-16 National Junion College Athletic Association (NJCAA) champions, 28-12.

"Our guys came out today and wrestled tough," said NYU Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "We looked to put points on the scoreboard every period and we succeeded."

Six diferent grapplers - Anthony Calvano (133 pounds), Evan Drill (141 pounds), Matthew Coppola (149 pounds), Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds), John Messinger (174 pounds), and Jack La Corte (197 pounds) won their bouts against both USMMA and NCCC.

"Calvano competed the best I've ever seen from him today," added Luce. "Coppola is returning to his old self after missing last season and Jazikoff and Messinger are buzz-saws in our lineup and put up big points today."

Other Highlights:

- Santino Pelusi earned a victory at heavyweight to close out the win over Nassau.

- Jackson Kligerman shut out his opponent from NCCC at 184 pounds.

- Messinger improved to 17-2 on the season and is undefeated against Division III competition.

The Mariner Duals wrap up NYU's first semester of competition. The squad will be back in action on January 5-6 at the NWCA National Duals in Ft. Wayne, IN.
