The New York University women's soccer team defeated William Paterson University 2-0 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Quarterfinals on Sunday, November, 13, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
With the win, the Violets (12-3-5) advance to the ECAC semifinals, which will be played on Saturday, November 19, at a site to be determined. William Paterson's season ends with a record of 14-6-1.
"We're excited to get the second win of the weekend," said NYU Head Coach
Michele Canning. "The girls played well this weekend, coming out focused and enthusiastic."
Both NYU goals came from freshmen as
Maddie Howard opened the scoring in the first half and classmate
Alex Benedict doubled the Violets' lead to 2-0 in the second half. Howard's goal, the first of her career, came when she knocked in her own rebound. Benedict's tally was the seventh of her rookie season and was assisted by
Marquel Love.
The NYU defense of
Sharon Lee,
Madeline Schier,
Callie Delaney and Howard limited William Paterson to just four shots, only two of which were on target. Goalkeeper
Cassie Steinberg saved both of the Pioneers' shots on goal to earn her 12th victory and eighth shutout of the season.
"Now we'll take the time to prepare and get ready to play again next weekend," concluded Canning.
The Violets' season will continue next Saturday at the ECAC semifinals. NYU will take on Grove City College at a site to be determined.
