Men's Volleyball Wins

Violets Defeat New Jersey City on Tuesday Night




The New York University men's volleyball teams defeated New Jersey City University 3-1 on Tuesday, March 31, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (15-9), currently ranked #9 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll, won the match over the Gothic Knights (17-10) by scores of 25-16, 24-26, 25-15, 25-22.

In the first set, the score was tied 7-7 when NYU scored the next four points and never trailed again. The Violets led by as many as 10 points in the set before settling for the nine-point win.

The second set was a compeletely different story as the Violets led by as many as three points on several occasions but could not hold on. NYU was ahead 23-12, but NJCU scored the next two points and five of the last six to even the match.

The Violets re-established momentum in the third set, breaking a 3-3- tie by scoring the next two points and never trailing again. NYU ended the set by scoring seven of the last eight points.

In the fourth and final set, the score was tied 16-16 when NYU scored the next six points en route to capturing the fourth-set victory.

Freshman Andrew Zhu led all Violets with 10 kills. He also had two block assists. 

"Andrew is very talented with a very high skill set," said coach Jose Pina. "He has shown he will perform. He will do the job that we need him to do."


HIGHLIGHTS

- Several freshmen made significant contributions. In addition to Zhu, Chase Corbett had six kills and two block assists, and Jaime Rivera contributed 10 assists and three service aces. 

-"Tonight was all about giving the new guys a chance to play," said Head Coach Jose Pina. "It was about those guys that normally don't start and giving them the opportunity to go out there and show what they are capable of."

- Sean Leahy contributed with eight kills, four service aces and five block assists.

- Phil Bueno put up eight kills and three block assists.

The Violets will return to the court tomorrow, April 1 as they take on #1 Stevens Tech in Hoboken, NJ.
