Baseball Falls to Brandeis

Violets Defeated 3-1 at MCU Park

The New York University baseball team fell in the finale of a three-game series with Brandeis University on Sunday, March 29, at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The Judges held off a late NYU rally, defeating the Violets 3-1.

Cameron Serapilio-Frank started the game on the mound for NYU (5-12) and pitched well enough to win. The freshman went 7.1 innings, scattering eight hits and not allowing an earned run. Serapilio-Frank handed the ball to classmate Matthew Millus to record the final five outs of the game. Millus also did not allow an earned run.

"Cameron had a solid performance," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "No earned runs in 7.1 innings, I'll take that every day."

The Violets' defense struggled all afternoon, making four errors.

"We have to put more pressure on the other teams," added Kimbler. "We have to get them to make mistakes. Right now, we are the ones making the mistakes."

The Violets struggled offensively and could not solve Brandeis starter Sean O'Neil. The Judges scored a run in the third inning to take the lead and would add two more in the top of the eighth.

NYU came close to tying the game in the bottom of the seventh as pinch-hitter Sam Raskin singled to right field with Jonathan Iaione on second base. Iaione rounded third and looked to have a chance at scoring but the throw beat him by a few feet and he was tagged out at the plate.

The Violets scored their only run in the ninth inning. With two outs, David Wagner singled and stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Scott Hilbrandt. Sy Cohen came up as the tying run, but grounded out to shortstop to end the game.

Highlights:

- Cohen led NYU with two hits.

- Serapilio-Frank had a career-high-tying five strikeouts.

- Christian Bloom had a single and a stolen base

- Jeremy Wayne walked in both of his plate appearances.

The Violets will take on the field on Wednesday, April 1, at 4pm against John Jay College. Live stats will be available.
