NYU 3 SUNY Cortland 2 | Tournament CentralThe New York University women's soccer team defeated SUNY Cortland 3-2 on Saturday, September 6, in Hoboken, NJ, as part of the 2014 Stevens Engineering Cup.
NYU (2-1) led the contest throughout, striking first in the ninth minute and then taking that 1-0 lead into the locker room at the half. The Violets were able to notch another score to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute.
The Red Dragons (0-2) got on the board in the 65th minute to trim NYU's lead to 2-1, but the Violets struck back quickly in the 69th minute to take the 3-1 lead. SUNY Cortland scored again in the 77th minute, but NYU would not relinquish the lead and held on for their second victory of the season.
HIGHLIGHTS:- Freshman forward
Teressa Fazio led the way for the Violets, notching four points on the afternoon. She assisted on NYU's first two scores, then when the Red Dragons came back to trim the Violets' lead to one, Fazio scored her first-career goal by winning a 50-50 ball just outside the box and scoring on an open net.
- Another new Violet, junior midfielder
Lexi Clarke, scored her first NYU goal off a Fazio pass out to the right corner to put the squad up 2-0.
- Sophomore midfielder
Ashley Cardounel scored her first-career goal as well, giving the Violets' their initial 1-0 lead after her centering pass scored off a deflection from the Red Dragon defense.
NYU will be back on the pitch for its second and final match of the 2014 Stevens Engineering Cup tomorrow, Sunday, September 7. The Violets will meet the hosting Stevens Institute of Technology for a scheduled 3:00 pm start.
