Women's Volleyball Sweeps at Violet Classic

NYU Defeats SUNY Oneonta and Sarah Lawrence

The New York University women's volleyball team earned victories against SUNY Oneonta and Sarah Lawrence College in the first day of the Violet Classic at the Jerome Coles Sports Center on Friday, September 19, in Manhattan.  

The Violets (10-5) swept both Oneonta (10-4) and Sarah Lawrence (1-5) by scores of 21-13, 26-24, 25-18 and 25-8, 25-6, 25-5, respectively, as many of the new NYU players were able to see a lot of court time.

"I am especially proud of the girls who had first-time experiences on the court," said NYU Head Coach Jolie Ward. "Vera Shulgina showed a lot of leadership on the court and Kristine Taves performed well from the back line."

SUNY Oneonta Highlights

- Nicole Frias recorded a match-high 10 kills for the Violets

- Emily Moore led the way with 15 assists.

- MaTia Hughes totaled a match-high 14 digs.

Sarah Lawrence Highlights

Both Katie Robinson and Kristine Taves served six aces for the team, career highs for both.

Frias equaled her opneing-match performance with 10 kills.

Brooke Tannahill had six digs in the back row for the Violets.

"I am feeling very confident after a showing like we had today," Ward added. "I'm happy with everyone's performance and I look forward to seeing us continue to improve in our match tomorrow."

The Violets return to the court to face SUNY Potsdam at 12:00 pm on Saturday, September 20, during the second day of competition at the Violet Classic.
