St. John Fisher Box ScoreBabson Box ScoreThe New York University women's volleyball team opened its 2014 season with victories over St. John Fisher College and Babson College on the first day of competition at the NYU Labor Day Invitational, which is being held on Friday and Saturday, August 29-30, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (2-0) posted a straight-set win against the Cardinals (25-18, 25-21, 25-8) and a four-set win over the Beavers (27-25, 20-25, 25-14, 25-15).
"I liked the way we made adjustments after struggling in the second set of the first match and went on to dominate the third," said Head Coach
Jolie Ward. "Then, after dropping the second set of the second match, we really meshed and played extremely well."
Gigi Morally finished with a match-high nine kills for the Violets in the first match and added 13 in the second.
Kacy Guajardo led all players with 14 kills vs. Babson after compiling seven vs. St. John Fisher.
"Kacy was on fire tonight," Ward said. "After being injured for most of last season and having to sit out a week of practice this preseason, she really proved her worth today."
HIGHLIGHTS:-
Katie Robinson finished with a total of 72 assists, including a career-high-tying 39 vs. Babson.

Brooke Tannahill 11, Robinson 10). Hughes also contributed a match-high 19 vs. St. John Fisher.

Nicole Frias totaled 15 kills in the two matches.
- Madi Karwas led St. John Fisher (0-2) with seven kills, while Alicia Wilde led Babson (1-1) with 13.
"We play against a tough opponent tomorrow, and I am interested to see how our line-ups mesh as we continue to try different combinations," Ward added.
The Violets are back on the court at 11:30am on Saturday to face Union College (2-0). The winner will play in the Championship Match, while the loser will play for third place. Both of those matches will be held at 3:30pm.
