Box Score The New York University women's soccer team defeated Richard Stockton College by a score of 1-0 on Friday, August 29, in its first game of the 2014 season. The win came in the first of two scheduled contests at the Cougar Classic, which is being held at Kean University in Union, NJ.
The only goal of the game came courtesy of,
Olivia Braender-Carr , who scored in her first collegiate game. Braender-Carr's unassisted goal broke a scoreless tie in the 37th minute. The shot came from the far right wing and the ball went just inside the far post.
Sophomore
Cassie Steinberg made three saves to increase her career shutout total to 5.5. She was helped by a Violets' defense that only allowed one shot in the first half.
"It was great to start the season with a hard-fought victory," said Head Coach
Michele Canning. "I'm happy that we were able to maintain the shutout."
HIGHLIGHTS:- This marks the second straight year that the Violets opened the season with a win.
- The Violets controlled play for much of the first half, out-shooting Richard Stockton five to one in the first 45 minutes.
- Junior forward
Melissa Menta led NYU with four shots on the afternoon.
- Ospreys' goalkeeper Lauren Haynes recorded five saves.
"It was good to see that some of the things we worked on in preseason paid dividends today," Canning explained.
NYU will wrap up action at the Cougar Classic tomorrow against Kean. The Violets are set to meet the hosts at 3pm.
