The New York University wrestling team will host Case Western Reserve University and the University of Chicago in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Wrestling Championship on Saturday, February 15, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
NYU will be vying for for its third straight UAA title after capturing both the 2012 and 2013 crowns. In all, NYU has won six UAA Championships, including back-to-back wins in 1999 and 2000, as well as victories in 2006 and 2008.
This season, NYU features an 8-9 overall record with a 4-4 record against Centennial Conference opponents. The squad has featured notable performances from a number of wrestlers thus far, as five different NYU grapplers,
Brandon Jones,
John Messinger,
Matt DiGiovanni,
DJ Albonico, and
Patrick Sheehan, have earned UAA Athlete of the Week honors in the past five weeks. Jones, DiGiovanni and Sheehan, all junior co-captains, have each earned at least two UAA weekly honors this season.
Jones, a 2013 All-Association performer and All-American at 133 pounds, has compiled a 12-2 record with a pin, two technical falls, and six major decisions at 141 pounds this year. He is currently ranked #2 in his weight class by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).
Action will get underway on Saturday with an 11:00 am match between CWRU and Chicago. NYU will face the loser of that match at 12:30 pm, followed by the winner of that match at 2:00 pm. Streaming Video and Live Results of all matches are available at the official
